Volume Surcharge (NL & EU)
Most of the shipped parcels contain empty space, leading to unnecessary volume and higher emissions. By reducing this, we can increase logistic capacity and cut CO2. PostNL apply a surcharge to parcels over 50 dm3 within the Netherlands or EU.

Applied when a parcel requires manual handling due to shape, packaging, or contents.

How to avoid Manual Processing surcharges
Size and Weight
Packages > 95x70x58 cm & < 10x10x1 cm. Weight 23-31.5 kg.
Packages move along the conveyor belt. Too large/heavy packages cannot move independently and require manual guidance.
Contents
Glassware, flowers, lab samples, x-rays.
High risk of damage poses risk to employees and results in non-standard handling to prevent damaged orders.
Unsecured Contents
Contents sliding back and forth.
Sliding products endure more impact, potentially damaging product and detaching packaging.
Package Form & Materials
Tubes, wood, metal, bubble wrap exterior, joined packages.
Non-rectangular shapes roll off belts. Certain materials damage sorting belts. Joined packages fall apart.
Parcels delivered with road transport are divided into five types:
- Normal Packages (NP): Max 31.5 kg, max length 175 cm, max girth 300 cm.
- Small Packages (KP): Max 3 kg, max length 50 cm, max girth 111 cm.
- DPD Parcelletter: Max 1 kg, max 36 x 26 x 3 cm.
- DPD Parcel Points: Max 20 kg, max length 100 cm, max girth 250 cm.
- DPD Lockers (NL only): Max 20 kg, max length 72 cm, max girth 278 cm.
From Jan 1, 2025, parcels >10kg or >20kg to Germany must be marked per German Postal Law with correct weight data.
Non Standard Parcel (NSP)
Applied if >130cm, >20kg, unstable shape, poorly packaged, or unreadable label. Waived if Excess Dimensions & Weight applies.

How do surcharges work?
Carriers apply surcharges when a shipment requires additional handling, space, or manual processing. These costs are passed on directly by the carrier and are not determined by Ectaroship.
Most common reasons for surcharges:
- Oversized or heavy parcels
- Non-standard packaging or shapes
- Remote delivery areas
- Failed or refused deliveries
How to avoid extra costs:
- Keep parcels within standard size and weight limits
- Use sturdy, rectangular packaging
- Ensure labels are correctly placed and readable
- Avoid shipping to remote areas when possible
